Grant Overview

Tech Pathways for Non-Traditional Learners in Utah

Utah is recognized as a burgeoning hub for technology and innovation, attracting companies and talent at an unprecedented rate. However, despite the state's economic growth, significant gaps exist in the workforce, particularly among adult learners seeking to enter the technology field. According to the Utah System of Higher Education, nearly one-third of the tech workforce comprises individuals from non-traditional backgrounds, yet many of these potential professionals lack access to training and mentorship opportunities essential for skill development.

The barriers faced by these non-traditional learners often include financial constraints, geographic limitations, and a lack of confidence in pursuing careers that are perceived as traditionally elitist. Many adult learnerswhether they are mothers re-entering the workforce, veterans transitioning to civilian life, or individuals seeking to switch careersexperience the daunting prospect of acquiring skills in this fast-paced environment. Reports indicate that without targeted intervention, these groups remain underrepresented in Utah's technology ecosystem.

To tackle these challenges, the grant will fund the establishment of a digital platform designed to provide online courses, mentorship, and networking opportunities specifically tailored for Utah's non-traditional learners. The educational resources will be structured to accommodate varying levels of experience, thus allowing individuals to build proficiency at their own pace. Emphasizing accessibility, the program will include both synchronous and asynchronous learning options, enhancing engagement regardless of personal schedules.

Collaboration with local tech companies and educational institutions will ensure that the curriculum is aligned with industry-specific needs. Furthermore, mentorship components will connect learners with experienced tech professionals, fostering meaningful relationships and providing valuable insights into career pathways. This blend of accessible learning and professional guidance aims to empower adult learners to gain confidence and competence in the technology field.

Through this initiative, Utah can address pressing workforce shortages while fostering a diverse pool of talent ready to meet the demands of an ever-evolving tech industry. By empowering non-traditional learners and recognizing their unique challenges, the state can cultivate a vibrant economy supported by innovative and inclusive contributions from all segments of the community.
