Grant Overview
Civic Engagement Gaps for Youth in Utah
Utah is often recognized for its high levels of civic engagement among adults, but this pattern does not fully extend to young people, particularly teenagers. Research indicates that youth participation in civic activities such as voting and community service in Utah is significantly lower than their adult counterparts. This is concerning given that civic engagement is crucial for the development of informed and active citizens, and is particularly relevant in a heterogeneously spiritual and culturally diverse state.
The groups most affected include teenagers from minority backgrounds who may feel disconnected from the electoral process, as well as those from socio-economically disadvantaged families. Without appropriate engagement opportunities, these young people may grow to believe that their voices and actions do not have an impact on their communities or society at large, resulting in a disconnect with the democratic process.
This funding initiative specifically supports civic engagement training programs for youth in Utah, aimed at fostering understanding of democratic processes and empowering young people to become actively involved in their communities. Through workshops, discussions, and hands-on activities, the program seeks to provide participants with the tools they need to navigate civic engagements effectively and confidently.
Targeted outcomes from this initiative are designed to promote increased participation in civic activities, including local elections and community service projects. Assessments will be conducted to measure changes in participants’ understanding of their civic responsibilities as well as their subsequent involvement in democratic processes following the program.
The necessity for such engagement initiatives in Utah is pronounced due to the state’s unique demographic dynamics, including a strong youth population and a growing diversity. By equipping young people with the knowledge and skills to participate in civic life, the grant aims to foster a new generation of engaged citizens who are knowledgeable and active participants in their communities, ultimately strengthening the democratic fabric of Utah.
