Grant Overview
Utah’s rural-urban split creates distinct research conditions for projects on women’s roles in community building. The Wasatch Front contains the majority of digitized church and municipal records, while the remaining 25 counties hold paper-only documents in facilities with limited public hours.
Applicants must demonstrate capacity to work in both environments. Projects limited to Salt Lake City archives will not receive funding unless they also include at least one rural county such as San Juan or Daggett. Broadband limitations in those counties require proposals to budget for physical travel rather than remote access.
The state’s unique municipal structure adds complexity. Many women’s community organizations operated through LDS Relief Society units whose records are held separately from county governments. Researchers must secure permission from local ecclesiastical authorities in addition to standard archival access requests.
This funding supports hybrid approaches that combine on-site examination of rural records with digital delivery of educational materials via the Utah Education Network. It also covers the cost of creating bilingual finding aids for counties with significant Navajo or Ute populations.
Utah’s requirements differ from those in Idaho or Nevada because the state mandates that all funded projects reconcile Relief Society records with county civil documents, a dual documentation system that does not exist in the same form elsewhere.
