Utah’s Digital Networking for Materials Science Collaboration initiative addresses the geographic separation between the Wasatch Front research universities and the state’s carbon, mining, and defense facilities located on the Colorado Plateau. The state’s population density drops from over 1,200 persons per square mile in Salt Lake County to fewer than 3 persons per square mile in several eastern counties, limiting routine in-person exchange of characterization equipment and specialized software licenses.
Applicants must propose a digital platform component that enables remote operation or data sharing between at least one Wasatch Front institution and one facility east of the Wasatch Mountains. Required documentation includes a memorandum of understanding with the remote site’s IT security officer confirming compliance with state data-breach notification statutes.
Review panels evaluate proposals on the number of distinct research groups that gain authenticated access to shared instruments within the first 12 months and on the volume of raw characterization files deposited into the state-managed materials data commons. Budgets permit purchase of secure data-transfer hardware but disallow new physical laboratory construction.
Past awards have linked electron-microscopy sessions at the University of Utah with real-time analysis by researchers at the Bingham Canyon mine and enabled shared access to high-temperature furnaces located at Hill Air Force Base. Utah reviewers require that platform access logs be submitted quarterly to the Utah Department of Technology Services.
Utah’s emphasis on documented cross-basin digital access distinguishes the program from Colorado’s, which does not condition continued disbursement on monthly verification of remote-instrument utilization from counties with population densities below 10 persons per square mile.
