Utah's science fair participation rates vary sharply between the Wasatch Front urban corridor and the rural counties east of the Wasatch Mountains, where student enrollment per school often falls below 200. Rural_urban_first review requires applicants to quantify the distance between targeted schools and the nearest university or industry mentor site.
Proposals must demonstrate that transportation or virtual mentoring arrangements can reach counties such as Emery, Garfield, and San Juan without duplicating existing university outreach already funded through the Utah Science Teaching Enhancement Program. Data from the Utah State Board of Education indicate that schools more than 90 miles from Salt Lake City or Provo maintain participation rates below 8 percent.
Utah's funding criteria differ from neighboring states because its concentrated population along a single north-south corridor creates predictable mentor shortages once applicants move beyond the I-15 corridor. Reviewers therefore require maps showing mentor travel times and backup virtual options.
