Utah's behavioral therapy trials for sporadic frontotemporal dementia must first receive clearance from the Utah Department of Health and Human Services institutional review board that oversees all state-funded cognitive intervention studies. This board requires separate review of any protocol involving remote monitoring devices, citing Utah's telehealth parity statute. Researchers at the University of Utah therefore allocate additional months for dual approval processes.
The state's high elevation and corresponding oxygen saturation levels in older adults introduce variables that affect baseline cognitive testing scores. Trials must therefore stratify participants by county altitude bands above 4,000 feet. Workforce constraints appear in the limited number of licensed occupational therapists trained in neurodegenerative conditions outside the Wasatch Front.
Doctoral researchers can satisfy readiness requirements by documenting access to the Utah Telehealth Network and by securing letters from county aging services agencies confirming referral pathways. Applications must include equipment calibration logs for any cognitive assessment tools used at elevations above 6,000 feet.
